The consequences of not having an MOT

Ensuring the safety of yourself, your passengers, and other road users is paramount, and the MOT test plays a crucial role in achieving this. By undergoing the MOT assessment, potential safety hazards and defects in your vehicle are identified, ensuring that it meets the required safety standards.

Driving without a valid MOT can result in serious penalties when stopped by the police. In such instances, you may face a fine of up to £1000

Additionally, if your vehicle is considered to be in a hazardous condition, car drivers can be subject to a fine of up to £2500, and the fine is unlimited for van drivers.

If your vehicle is unsafe, you’ll also receive three penalty points on your driving licence.

Furthermore, if you have a prior conviction for driving in unsafe conditions within the past three years, you may be disqualified from driving for a minimum of six months.

MOT (Ministry of Transport) tests are a legal requirement for most vehicles on the road, so if you’re due one, book now. Whether you’re driving a hatchback, SUV, coupe or saloon, you will need an MOT every year (or after three years if you’re driving a brand-new car).

Arrange Your MOT Quickly and Easily with GLM Automotive

Put simply, an MOT assesses the vehicle’s overall roadworthiness, ensuring it complies with the set standards that all vehicles on the road need to meet. During the MOT, certified examiners will inspect various components of a vehicle to make sure this is the case, including the structure, brakes, tyres, lights, exhaust emissions, and more.

The results of an MOT help identify potential issues or defects that could compromise the vehicle’s safety or environmental impact – both for the driver and for other road users. If any faults are detected during the examination, they’ll be noted on the MOT certificate, and our team will be able to advise you on the best course of action next.

Having an MOT test means that you can have peace of mind, knowing that your car meets the required safety and environmental standards to keep you and your passengers safe, and to make sure your car is as environmentally sound as possible.

What does an MOT check?

An MOT test is very comprehensive, and covers a lot of different parts of your vehicle, including (but not limited to):

  • Axles and suspension
  • Battery and electrical wiring
  • Body and structure of the car (including the seats and doors)
  • Brakes
  • Brake fluid contamination
  • Brake pad warning light
  • Daytime running lights
  • Diesel particulate filter (DPF) if needed
  • Exhaust emissions
  • Fluid leaks (with some exceptions)
  • Fuel system
  • Horn
  • Number plates
  • Reversing lights
  • Seatbelts
  • Speedometer
  • Steering
  • Visibility (including the wipers, windscreen, and mirrors)
  • Wheels and tyres

FAQs about Mercedes MOT

On average, an MOT test takes 45-60 minutes. However, this doesn’t mean you can be in and out of the garage in less than an hour.

If your vehicle fails and repairs are needed, you can expect your car to be in the garage for longer, particularly if there are any complex repairs needed. MOT test centres aren’t allowed to let you drive away if your car has failed its MOT and your old MOT has expired already unless you are driving to get the required repairs carried out.

So, while the test itself can be fairly quick, you should plan to leave your car for much longer in the event of an MOT failure.

An MOT needs to be carried out every year.

New vehicles don’t need an MOT in England, Scotland or Wales until they are three years old.

No, it is illegal to drive without a valid MOT. The one exception is driving to the MOT test centre. If you are caught by the police without a valid MOT, you can be fined up to £1000. If your car is deemed “dangerous” as a result of not having an MOT, this goes up to £2500, and you can have three points added to your licence, or even be banned from driving.

There are thousands of ANPR cameras up and down the country which can flag whether or not you have a valid MOT, so you don’t even need to be pulled over by the police to be caught without an MOT.

If your car fails an MOT, you need to get it fixed and retested as a matter of urgency. The team at GLM Automotive can help you get your car ready for its retest and arrange a second test as quickly and easily as possible to get you back on the road safely.
